Saanichton, B.C. – BC Hockey, along with Hockey Canada, is proud to support the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend (WGIHW) slated for October 7-8, 2023.
World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend is an international celebration of the women and girls’ game that has reached hundreds of thousands of young girls over the last decade. The goal is to have events from coast-to-coast that recruit, retain and engage female players, coaches, officials and fans – old and new. It aims to celebrate and grow female hockey and bring teams together for events geared towards recruitment, celebration, visibility and retention.
“World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend is a weekend that we look forward to each year.” BC Hockey’s Vice President, Member Services – Minor & Female Brianna Davey said. “It gives Districts and MHAs the chance to create events that promote girls’ hockey in their communities. The memories and friendships that these experiences create are what makes our game so special.”
Any Districts or Minor Hockey Associations interested in hosting an event have until September 18, 2023 to submit an application for their event HERE. Successful applicants will receive financial reimbursement from Hockey Canada to offset the costs associatied with putting on the event.
In 2021, more than 8500 girls benefited from the WGIHW with the delivery of more than 100 events across the country. If you are looking for some inspiration or if you would like to go on a pictorial tour of the different events that have been held around the globe over the years, CLICK HERE.
